Information from international courses - Short courses SETAC 2012

Young scientists and Ph.D. students from the Research Centre of Toxic Compounds in the Environment participated in the SETAC World Congress in May 2012 in Berlin, Germany (http://berlin.setac.eu/?contentid=404). The main congress topic was "Securing a sustainable future: Integrating science, policy and people". Prior to the conference opening ceremonial, a number of special 'Short courses' on various topics were organized. Four young scientist from the Research Centre were supported by RECETOX NETWORKING project to participate in the courses; two of them informed about the courses on the seminar on 14th June 2012.

Dr. Kateřina Nováková presented the information gained in the course "The Endocrine System: The Good, The Bad, and The Regulations". The course was focused on the functions and interactions in the endocrine system of mammals, birds and aquatic organisms. The requirements of the US EPA’s Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP), as well as those for REACH and other regulatory initiatives around the world, were reviewed. Participants had an opportunity to use an interactive simulation game.

Dr. Radka Zounková informed the audience about the course "How to best conduct aquatic ecotoxicity tests according to the International Guidelines", that was aimed at providing guidance on how to perform daphnia-, algae- and fish-tests according to the EU, US EPA and OECD guidelines. Further, various testing strategies, data analysis and extrapolation methods, and interpretation of the results from aquatic studies were discussed.
